_We are honored to have the Yokohama International School (YIS) as our host and platinum sponsor for the Flat Classroom Conference 2013.

Japan is an amazing and unique country. Japanese food, culture, hospitality, natural sights, and historic sights; from sushi, to Mt. Fuji, to sumo wrestling, highlights of this vibrant and historic country are known around the world. Exciting technology and innovation are evident in every corner of the city - visiting Japan (and Tokyo in particular) is like a trip into the future!

Reasons for Hosting the Flat Classroom® Conference
YIS recently began our Connected Learning Community (1:1 program) in the fall of 2011, and as our school community has developed through the implementation of this program, we have come to realize that international collaboration and authentic learning connections between schools around the world is a natural next step in our progression. On our Learning Hub, our students are regularly sharing their learning via eportfolio blogs, and our teachers utilize the same technology to extend learning beyond the classrooms, but we have not yet started to develop more concrete and committed relationships with other students and teachers around the world. The Flat Classroom® Conference would give us the foundational skills, motivation and expertise to begin connecting our school community beyond our local environment. Please feel free to read more about YIS on our website.

YIS is an exceptionally connected and supportive community. As a school, we are committed to the best possible professional development offerings to staff and regularly host EARCOS weekend workshops several times a year, as well as our own visionary annual conference, Bridging the Gap. We are also hosting the Certificate of Educational Technology and Information Literacy for Tokyo-based educators, with 32 participants. In addition to being well staffed and well supported, we strive to be open in all that we do, allowing all student and teacher blogs to be public, inviting interested schools from the Asia region (as well as within Japan) to visit our Connected Learning Community, and encouraging teachers from around the region to attend professional development opportunities at YIS. Our school location, technological infrastructure, and commitment to connected learning, make YIS an ideal candidate for the Flat Classroom Conference.

Head of School at YIS, James Macdonald says, "On a personal note, I would like to add how excited I am at the possibility of YIS hosting a conference like this.  I think the format is very innovative and I think this sort of model is something that we are going to see more of in future.  I am not sure of all the benefits that our school will glean from this event, but that is also part of the excitement.  I am very confident that with our team here, the facilities that we have, our IT infrastructure and commitment to the Flat Classroom conference, that Yokohama 2013 could be one of the most successful events yet."
